■Bdifferences to previous versions: page: 1
2.6 - more possibilities when printing; for example, the `puzzle without black
squares' may be used to print a puzzle where the numbering is outside
the puzzle grid (specify `print also black squares').
- additional data banks are available (each data bank costs at most 50 SF):
Deutsch - Deutsch (allgemein)
Deutsch - Deutsch (Begriffe aus der Bibel)
Français - Français (commun)
- when you start CROSWRD with "CROSWRD /K", the abbreviations are not
exploited. Therefore, the search is faster and you can use any abbrevia-
tions. Though, the abbreviations are no longer replaced in a search, that
is, for example, you have to enter "abbr.*" and not "abbreviation*".
- in the extended version (CROSWRDA) you can exchange the data bank or add
other data banks. Thus, you can build several data banks and than use
them together as required. The actual data bank directories are defined
with "N" and searched in that order. The directories may be specified on
the command line: "CROSWRDA dir1;dir2;dir3".
- search answers and clues: more possibilities with "*" and "?".
- search words: words with vowel mutations and words at the beginning of
clues may be exploited as answers. Thus, substantial more answers are
available and the data bank is fully utilized.
°differences to previous versions: page: 2
- more words: extended version has more entries. The shareware version
contains less entries because the room is limited to one diskette.
- "^K" improves automatically a crossword puzzle using the available data
bank (CROSWRD*.DAT).
- improved input: a line may be entered and corrected more comfortably
using the cursor keys.
- modified input at the editor: all commands are entered with <Ctrl> and
character. The special editing mode does no longer exist.
- options: the type of the word search may be specified.
- more hints and better layout.
2.5 - correct treatment of "ß" (double s in German).
- CROSWRD needs a 100% compatible. With "CROSWRD /B", CROSWRD should run
on all computers with the operating system MS-DOS or PC-DOS.
■Csome hints: page: 1
- CROSWRD is an electronic dictionary which contains puzzle answers and
puzzle clues. A puzzle answer is the word that is searched. And the puzzle
clue paraphrases that answer. Example: "intellect" is the clue and the
searched answer is "MIND". Two searching types are available: With "B",
you can search answers and/or clues. With "W", you can search only whole
words. Vowel mutations and the "ß" are correctly handled.
- because of the lack of space, not all circumscriptions are listed in the data
bank. Some detours will help you to find the good entry. A detour has the
form "word ? -> ? word". That means, search "*word" instead of "word*"
under "B" or put the words in another order.
- the search is faster when you know the first letter.
- you may exclude some entries at the search ("B" or "W"). For example, if
you do not want abbreviations then define the word "abb" (or "abbreviation")
as exception under "O" passing by "E". In the same manner you can prevent
for example, French answers defining "French". The exceptions are not
converted automatically to upper case letters. The comparison is done
after the replacement of the abbreviations in an entry. Answers of foreign
languages may be avoided defining the character ":" as an exception
because many clues have the form: "French: not". That applies to "A"
under "F", too.
°some hints: page: 2
- several detection levels may be specified for a word search ("W"). Under
"O", the so-called search option is specified with a value range of "1"
to "4". For example, "1" means that only those answers are recognized which
are in upper case letters. That applies to "A" under "F", too.
- if you use abbreviations at the search ("B"), you have to pay attention to
capitalization and spelling: so "abbr.*" and not "Abbr.*". See "A".
- the data of CROSWRD do not come from a dictionary but have been collected
by me from real crosswords. Hence, there are typical puzzle words which
you cannot find in a normal dictionary like "river/Russia" or "aromatic"
"plant". In addition to this program, other books may help you to find
the correct answers like "The Concise Oxford Dictionary", any crossword
puzzle dictionary and any good atlas.
- CROSWRD can also help you to compose crosswords. You reach the integrated
editor with "E" where you can compose, print, and solve your crossword
puzzles. In addition, you can define (using "F") the so-called inserting
puzzles. Try once the whole thing using the delivered examples. Enjoy it!
- when you compose crossword puzzles, CROSWRD may help you twice: CROSWRD
searches for you the answers and gives you the clues, too. In addition,
you have very often the possibility to choose among several clues. You
have no longer to leaf through dictionaries!
°some hints: page: 3
- notice the hints in the built-in editor (key "<F1>" under "E")!
- you may use CROSWRD as a synonym dictionary. The lack of room in crossword
puzzles cause appropriate and short clues. Therefore, the herein stored clues
or synonymous words are very often more precise than in dictionaries.
- we assume that some abbreviations like NT or USA are well known.
- the program CROSWRD scans in the actual directory for CROSWRDx.DAT. You
may change that specifying a directory on the command line. For example,
"CROSWRD B:" and CROSWRDx.DAT will be read from B:. Even two different
directories are possible: "CROSWRD A: B:" (shareware version).
- you cannot add new entries (answers and clues) with the shareware version.
However, you can send me more puzzle answers on a diskette with the IBM
character set. Format: "MIND=intellect" or "VOLGA=river/Russia". The
puzzle answer has to be in upper case letters. The puzzle clue should
contain no abbreviations. And configure your text editor that way that
the text contains no format characters. Diskette size: 5¼ or 3½ inches
with MS-DOS format till 720 Kbytes.
- key for hints: "<F1>".
- key for abandoning (operation): "A" or "<Esc>".
- key for quitting (program or subprogram): "<Esc>".
and now good luck when solving or composing crossword puzzles!
■Dhints to compose crosswords: page: 1
- all commands are executed using key <Ctrl> plus character (press key <Ctrl>
and while still pressing <Ctrl> press another key, for example, "L"). We use
here the short notation "^L" for the keys "<Ctrl>" and "L".
- text entries are stored automatically in the grid.
- there are several auxiliary hints which you can select with "^H".
- an electonic sheet with at most 50 x 60 (height x width) squares is offered.
You may write what you like onto this sheet. Many functions will help you to
handle the data on that sheet: delete a row or a column; insert a row or a
column; copy a text rectangle of any size; read in from an external file a
text rectangle of any size; store with "^S" the built data or reload the data
with "^L". And much more. Try once all functions!
- with "^A", "^B", and "^W", you may directly call the corresponding search
functions without leaving this program part.
- delete/insert row/column: refers to the actual cursor postion.
- copy/move text: source position is the actual cursor.
- data to add from a file: destination position is the actual cursor.
- with "^Y", a crossword puzzle will be shown twice as large. Each character
uses then two characters in width. The text is more readable. However,
only useful if your puzzle is not larger than 30 characters.
- a puzzle answer may not be longer than 30 characters.
°hints to compose crosswords: page: 2
- a puzzle clue may not be longer than 50 characters.
- you may enter at any time a clue. The actual cursor is the reference. CROSWRD
checks automatically when storing and loading that there exists for each
answer also a clue. Using "^U", CROSWRD shows on the screen which answers
have been defined. Note that deleting, inserting, copying, or moving may
cause the loss of clues.
- you may abandon quite all inputs entering an invalid reply. For example,
giving an empty file name or an empty clue.
- with "^F", you can print a crossword puzzle (puzzle without black squares,
puzzle including clues, or puzzle with numbers [traditional format]). The
generated file may be later printed with "PRINT file.RTF". Specifying
"PRN" for the file name will print directly the crossword puzzle. CROSWRD
evaluates automatically the numbers (puzzle with numbers) or the placement
of clues (puzzle including clues). However, you should know in advance what
kind of puzzle you want to compose.
- puzzle including clues: only one clue is possible in one square. A square
can hold in maximum 4 lines with 8 characters each. The allowed divisions
have to be specified with "-", " ", or "|". "|" is replaced by "-" when
that division is used. Otherwise, "|" is not printed. A clue square cannot
contain blanks or letters.
- black squares must not be represented by blanks.
°hints to compose crosswords: page: 3
- take care with answers which consist only of one letter or which exist more
than once. The clues may move around.
- the character "|" in clues is never printed.
- when you leave this program part, the puzzle is deleted. CROSWRD will ask you
again if the puzzle has not been saved.
- with "^X", the computer builds its own inserting puzzle. The calculation is
stopped as soon as a better total number of points is reached or when after N
attempts the result could not have been improved. N corresponds to the number
of words. You can stop at any time with the abandoning key. Let try the
computer several times. Try to be better!
- when you store a finished puzzle with "^S", you may let encode the solution.
Therefore, one can solve your puzzle on the screen without entering
immediately "^G" to see the solution. Except that he guesses the correct
key word!
- to solve puzzles at the screen: load with "^L" a finished puzzle and enter
"Y". Fill in the puzzle. Check with "^G". You may store your actual solution
with "^S". Therefore, you may solve a puzzle in several times. You reread
your solutions (or of others) with "^D". The program recognizes automatically
that your are solving a puzzle and changes internally the commands "^D" and
"^S". That is, "^S" stores only the solution (*.RTL) and "^D" refers to the
whole grid.
°hints to compose crosswords: page: 4
- a buzzer signal indicates an error or that you have to enter something.
- the computer may build puzzles automatically. You have to set the size of the
grid and the words using the inserting puzzle ("F"). Initialize all letters
to one point ("A-Z=1"). The computer builds with "^X" a new puzzle. The
computer tries to improve the actual puzzle with "^V". The rules for
inserting puzzles are valid with "^X" and "^V". With "^Q", the computer
builds an ordinary puzzle. Also the black squares may be fixed, that is,
a specific layout of the puzzle may be set. In that case, the computer does
not add any black squares. Note that all words have to be connected together.
- with "^K", CROSWRD tries to improve an ordinary crossword puzzle. You have
to fix the size of the grid (using "F") so that CROSWRD knows, until where
it can place words. In minimum, one word must be present. Use "+" to
place black squares. You may let build automatically outlines with "^Q"
or place yourself some words. Therefore, you can define theme words.
However, when the crossword puzzle is nearly empty, CROSWRD needs a lot of
time to place a word. Hence, be patient! Do not forget that the search
option and the exceptions are also valid here (see "O"). Remember that you
can stop at any time the calculcation with the key "A".
- on an A4 page (297 x 210 mm), you can print at most 20 x 16 (height x width)
squares; the puzzle without black squares is limited to 18 x 15 squares.
°hints to compose crosswords: page: 5
- you may specify some parameters according to the puzzle type when printing
("^F"). Instead to number a puzzle in the squares (puzzle with numbers,
traditional format), it is possible to number around the grid (specify
`puzzle without black squares' and `print also black squares'). Try once all!
- you have to adapt CROSWRD.CFG to your printer. The printer must support
the IBM-PC character set. Please check first the actual setting under "D"
with "A" or print the file CROSWRD.CFG. Probably, your printer works fine
with the specified control characters. Otherwise, you have to change the
setting under "D" with "F". However, it is better when you adapt CROSWRD.CFG
with a program editor and then restart CROSWRD. Please keep the original
version of CROSWRD.CFG!
- some special control sequences have to be defined: EMPTYZR is the black
square in puzzles with numbers or puzzles without black squares [used this
time] (2 lines with 5 characters). RIGHT, DOWNRIGHT, UPRIGHT, RIGHTDOWN,
DOWN, and LEFTDOWN are the direction indicators in puzzles including clues
(one line with 4 characters).
- file name extensions: *.RTL (puzzle solution), *.RTD (answer=clue) and
*.RTF (finished puzzle to solve); *.EBR (data for inserting puzzles).
■ERules for inserting puzzles: you have to place words of a list in a given grid
so that you get a maximal number of points. The writing direction is from left
to right and from top to bottom. All words have to be connected together. How-
ever, words or letter groups cannot lie side by side. You place the words with
the built-in editor. The editor checks and calculates an inserting puzzle with
"^P". This program part fixes also the default data for an ordinary crossword
puzzle that is built automatically by the computer with "^Q" in the editor.
Height and width are also valid for "^K".

■FThe word or the word parts to be searched has to be specified. If you specify
"note", the program searches only for "note" (as with "W", search words). Vowel
mutations, "ß", and other special characters are converted automatically to
upper case letters. With "not*", the program will find "NOT", "NOTE", "NOTES",
etc., that is, the "*" corresponds to any number of characters; for example,
"v*t*n" returns "VENTILATION". In addition, you can use the "?" which corres-
ponds to any character. With "note?", the program will find "NOTED" and "NOTES".
"*" and "?" may be used together, for example, "n?t*".
■GThe word to be searched has to be specified. Unknown characters are specified
by "?", for example, "MEA?" for "MEAL", "MEAT", etc. All letters are allowed.
Vowel mutations, "ß", and other special characters are converted automatically
to upper case letters.
■HWhen an answer is found, it will be shown. You can terminate the search with
the key "A" or continue the search with another key. Moreover, you can abandon
at any time a (long) search with "A".
Entering an empty line returns to the main level.
